It Can Be Difficult to Determine the Cause of Intellectual Decline

August 05, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Experts report that as people age, dementia and depression are both common conditions and may be confused with one another. Additionally, one may lead to the other as depression is linked to a higher risk for dementia, and dementia can cause depression.

The Harvard Medical School explains depression in the elderly can lead to a “phenomenon called pseudodementia—an apparent intellectual decline that stems from a lack of energy or effort.” They say individuals with this problem are often forgetful, move slowly, exhibit low motivation and signs of slowing mental prowess. If a loved one experiences these types of symptoms, their doctor may treat it with the same medications used to treat depression. As the person’s mood improves, they typically begin to function at their previous level.

Professionals share a few ways depression and dementia differ to help families and healthcare providers determine what is going on. One important difference is the time span of the decline.  A person with depression typically shows a faster decline in mental functioning than those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Also, Alzheimer’s disease causes confusion and disorientation as well as problems with short-term memory. Depression causes problems with concentration.

People suffering from depression do not have more than the usual difficulties with writing, speaking and motor skills, and are more aware of any memory problems they are experiencing. People suffering from Alzheimer’s disease seem indifferent to those types of changes. However, to determine the cause of the problem, it is important to make an appointment with the person’s healthcare provider.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge provides compassionate, comprehensive care to those with memory impairment.  Residents receive 24-hour care, daily health monitoring, access to a full-time nurse, and participate in wellness programs and services tailored to their special needs.  For trusted senior living in Peoria, Arizona, please contact us to learn more.

Osteoarthritis is the Most Common Form of Arthritis

August 02, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

The Lancet journal reports the most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis (OA); and it is estimated to affect 500 million people worldwide (7% of the global population). In the US, over 32.5 million have OA, or 1 in 5 adults. Of Americans with OA, 70% are over the age of 55; and it is the leading cause of disabilities in seniors.

Females are more likely to have OA with many cases occurring after menopause. Research suggests the resulting physiological changes in a woman’s body accounts for the elevated number of cases. Obesity is another risk factor, and may be due to the increased stress on weight-bearing joints. Others are more at risk for OA due to their occupation such as agricultural work, cleaning, construction and carpentry.

OA develops as the cartilage covering the end of a joint bone begins to wear away; and the joint rubs against a rough surface rather than smooth cartilage. With repeated use of a joint and the changes in the tissue over time, the condition is more common in older adults. Pain and stiffness associated with OA can impact a person’s day-to-day life and lead to depression and anxiety as well as make it harder for them to control their weight.

While exercise has been shown to reduce pain in people with OA, it also comes with challenges. Many fear making the pain worse, and instability can cause a person to feel like they may fall or contribute to a lack of range of motion and mobility.

However, exercise can be very beneficial to people with OA. Julie Lombardo, a physical therapist and CEO of Capitol Physical Therapy in Madison, Wisconsin, says, “It’s easy for people who encounter hurdles to give up on exercising when that is the last thing they should do.” Some exercises are better than others for people with OA; and consult with your healthcare provider if you are new to exercise, have high blood pressure or heart disease, or are obese.

Best Superfoods for Seniors

July 26, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

While everyone benefits from eating a healthy diet, it is even more important for children and seniors. In terms of seniors, doctors explain their need for more calories declines so the foods they do consume each day need to consist of the healthiest foods to help maintain strength, bone mass and cognitive function. Targeted foods can help stave off medical conditions such osteoporosis and age-related muscle mass loss from sarcopenia.

Getting the essential vitamins and minerals you need from food that doesn’t include excessive calories, sugar, fat and preservatives can be challenging. This is where focusing on foods especially high in nutrients is a great way to maintain your health and weight. Experts say while there is no scientifically agreed definition for “superfoods,” they are generally considered to be essential functional foods that are nutritionally dense.

One of the food groups known as superfoods is dark, leafy vegetables. High in antioxidants, they help remove free radicals from our body (unstable molecules that can build up in cells and cause damage to other cells). Another superfood is Brussel sprouts, which is from the cruciferous family of vegetables that includes broccoli and cauliflower, which are also good examples of nutrient dense foods. All are high in fiber and contain a number of minerals such folate as well as vitamin C and vitamin K.

Berries are superfoods that contain antioxidants and polyphenols, which are compounds typically found in plant-based foods. Blueberries contain high levels of vitamins C and K; along with phytochemicals and antioxidants to help promote bone and brain health (studies have found blueberries may reduce the risk of age-related memory decline). Strawberries are among the 20 highest antioxidant fruits and a good source of manganese and potassium; and eight strawberries provide more vitamin C than an orange. They also contain minerals including calcium, iron, and folate along with antioxidants called anthocyanins.

Salmon and other fatty fish like tuna and sardines are considered superfoods as they too are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help decrease your risk for heart disease. They also contain a high amount of protein, essential for maintaining muscle mass and strength.

MorningStar of Arvada offers seniors a choice of independent living and assisted living with a wide selection of suites; community amenities; delicious, healthy dining service and a complement of wellness programs and activities. The Importance of Eye Exams

July 15, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Optometrists and ophthalmologists explain practicing good eye care includes regular eye exams. The current recommendation for older adults from the American Academy of Ophthalmology is to get a complete eye examination at 40 years old. Those with diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of eye disease should be tested earlier.

For adults over 65, the recommendation is every 1 to 2 years and should include a check for eye diseases and conditions such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.  After an exam, your doctor can tell you how often to have your eyes checked going forward. It’s important to follow the schedule your ophthalmologist gives you as the risk for eye disease increases with age.

During a dilated eye exam, an ophthalmologist will check pupil reaction, eye pressure, retina, optic nerve, side/peripheral vision, eye movement, muscle balance and coordination. They will also check your focusing ability and eyeglass prescription. The doctor will ask about your medical history including if you or a family member has diabetes, as diabetics have a higher risk of developing cataracts and glaucoma as well as diabetic retinopathy. In addition, they will want to know if you have high blood pressure as over time it can cause damage to the blood vessels around the eyes. Shingles is another disease that can cause inflammation around the eyes, swelling of the eyelids and pain.

August is National Eye Exam month and is a good time for an exam check as Americans are exposed to the greatest amount of UV ray exposure during the summer months, which can increase the risk for cataracts, growths, and cancer. Ophthalmologists say while our eyes need exposure to natural light to maintain our sleep cycles, it is important to wear sunglasses with UV-blockers and hats as protection against the sun.

A Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease Brings a Range of Emotions

July 12, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

If you have recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, you are not alone.  It is estimated that nearly 7 million Americans have Alzheimer’s and it was the 5th leading cause of death among people aged 65 and over in 2021.  As a way to help families impacted by the disease, the Alzheimer’s Association provides a variety of resources and services.

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s brings with it a range of emotions. Learning that you have a disease with no cure and no way to control what is happening to you can create feelings of anger, denial, depression and resentment as well as fear.  Another common emotion is isolation and the feeling that no one else understands what you are going through.  There can even be a sense of relief at finding out what is happening to you and having those concerns validated.

The Alzheimer’s Association counsels that it helps to try and come to terms with your diagnosis and the emotions you are experiencing as a way to help you to move forward.  They explain that, “once you make the commitment to take care of your emotional needs; you may find that you can rise to the challenge and face your diagnosis.”

You will find helpful coping tips on their website to make it easier to deal with what you are going through.  One of their most important suggestions is to have good support whether it comes from joining a support group, sharing concerns with family and friends, or talking to a counselor or member of the clergy.  They also say to continue to do the activities you enjoy for as long as you are able.  Finally, they remind individuals to take time to “feel sad, mourn and grieve.”

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge offers compassionate and loving care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our Reflections Neighborhood not only provides an atmosphere of safety and well-being but also encourages and supports choice and independence to the fullest extent possible.  Our memory care residents participate in recreational and purposeful activities, including exercise, music, life skills, and art, and as well as outings and special events. Retirement Communities Offer Seniors a Variety of Benefits

July 05, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

In the past, many elderly people wished to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. However, with the array of senior communities offered today, older adults are realizing the various benefits senior housing brings to their quality of life.

Studies are discovering senior living may contribute to a longer life as well as improved physical and emotional health than for those who remain in their own homes. After all, senior living provides a maintenance-free environment where residents no longer have to worry about the unexpected expenses of home repairs or never-ending maintenance. Retirement communities are designed around the needs of residents including their safety and security. Seniors also find a sense of community, which can be hard to achieve once you retire from a job or no longer drive.

Retirement communities like MorningStar at Golden Ridge excel in offering residents best-in-class dining as well as social activities and special events to look forward to each day. Our fitness centers, swimming pool and exercise classes tailored to older adults allow you to stay as active as you like. Other amenities add to the vibrant environment and offer convenience such as beautiful gathering spaces, bistro bar, theater, salon and life enrichment rooms.

A look at our monthly calendar gives you an idea how many opportunities there are to stay engaged and have fun.  Games, trivia, live entertainment, movie nights, coffee groups and special interest clubs ensure there is something for everyone.  In addition, forming new friendships is generally not a problem as you are amongst a group of like-minded adults.

For residents in assisted living, our community gives them peace of mind knowing help is always at hand when needed with various care services. MorningStar’s residents receive 24/7 support and have access to licensed nurses, medication management, therapeutic services and more. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Couples are Welcome at MorningStar at Golden Ridge

July 01, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

When a couple’s health experiences are different, and one is healthier than the other, that person may assume the role of caregiver. As time evolves, the needs of the chronically ill spouse may become more complex and require daily care. This can be difficult for the healthier spouse, and even impact his/her own health and well-being.

To ensure both parties have an opportunity for the best quality of life; an assisted living community may be the answer. While leaving a family home and transitioning to community life is a big change, the transition is easier for the person with a spouse or partner by their side. Marissa Kirby, NHA, CHC, CHPC, and vice president of compliance at NEWGEN HEALTH, LLC, explains, “In many cases, particularly when a couple has been married for many years, the ability to live together can make or break their decision on whether or not to move to an assisted living facility.”

Many senior living communities like MorningStar at Golden Ridge welcome couples; where we not only expertly and compassionately address the needs of a person living with a chronic illness or disability but also the needs of the healthier spouse. MorningStar’s assisted living provides the maintenance-free environment of independent living with the addition of care services for the ADLs (activities of daily living) tailored to the resident. We offer an array of floor plans starting with studios and one-bedroom options to larger two-bedroom, 1.5 bath suites. Suites feature a kitchenette with full-sized refrigerator, handicap-accessible bathroom, emergency call system and most have a stackable washer/dryer.  Moreover, MorningStar at Golden Ridge welcomes your four-footed furry family member.

Senior-friendly activities, resort-style amenities and built-in companionship can be a winning combination for many couples. Please contact MorningStar at Golden Ridge to learn more.  In addition to assisted living, we also offer independent living and specialized memory care at our beautiful community in Peoria, Arizona.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. AN AI Technology to Help Prevent Falls

June 26, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

MorningStar of Arvada’s memory care provides an environment to enhance quality of life for residents including protecting their safety by preventing falls. This is especially important for those living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia as they are at increased risk for falls. Studies from the National Institute of Health report a 10 percent higher risk of falls for elderly people with dementia and Alzheimer; and a 7 times higher chance of a greater number of falls. Statistics like this are what lead to us innovative technology to detect and prevent falls with (AI) Artificial Intelligence like SafelyYou.

Experts explain the reasons people with dementia are more likely to fall are due to problems with mobility, balance and strength. Additionally many are prone to pacing, while others have trouble finding their way around and forget to pay attention to hazards. Agitation can lead to some people with Alzheimer’s walking too fast for their abilities. More falls  can also make dementia worse as well as lower the person’s quality of life as they may become more fearful of falling and rely more on their caregivers.

SafelyYou utilizes cutting-edge artificial intelligence to enable cameras to detect falls with unprecedented accuracy. The video is recorded only when a fall is detected; and our team members are notified to provide immediate assistance. Families have peace of mind knowing a loved one is getting the quick response they need.

Along with memory care, MorningStar of Arvada provides independent living and assisted living with senior care and hospitality services, luxury amenities and activities. Our array of elegant suites is available in studios, and one- and two bedroom configurations with some as large as 1,374 square feet; and many with private patios or balconies. Contact us to set up a personalized tour of our senior living community and ask our Wellness Director about the use of SafelyYou for your loved one.

Games & Activities Can Help Keep Your Brain Sharp

June 19, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

As we age, many of us find ourselves more absentminded and forgetful than we were in our younger years. Seeing someone unexpectedly from our past can result in recognizing the face but being unable to bring a name to mind. Experts say some lapses in memory are common as we age but encourage seniors to do cognitive activities to help stay sharp.

Brain games exercise your memory, attention, brain speed, people skills, intelligence and navigation just like a trip to the gym gives you a cardio workout and exercises your abs and quads. One good resource for such games is the AARP online site. It offers a variety of fun and entertaining games and puzzles such as daily crosswords, word games like scrabble, Sudoku and trivia as well as the opportunity to join a bridge, chess or backgammon game.

The New York Times offers the daily Wordl puzzle that gives your brain a  quick workout along with several other word puzzles for Times’ subscription holders. Other programs offering brain games targeted at seniors can be accessed online for a monthly or yearly fee. In addition to the Internet, if you have an iPad or tablet, you can find challenging brain game apps.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, our vibrant community offers seniors an engaging lifestyle for independent living and assisted living as well as trusted, compassionate memory care. Residents are treated to best-in-class meals, luxury amenities and a wide array of wellness programs and activities providing companionship with like-minded adults of a similar age. Our monthly calendar is loaded with activities such as lectures, word and card games, trivia and Mexican Train to keep the brain sharp while having fun.

Activities not only offer opportunities for challenging your cognitive skills but meeting and socializing with friends while enjoying a good laugh together. Contact us to learn more about MorningStar’s senior living in Peoria, Arizona.

Adding Certain Spices to Your Diet Could Lower Your Risk for Dementia

June 17, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Research from the UK reports there are things we can do that may influence our risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s Research UK states some of the things that shape our risk like our age and our genes can’t be changed. “But others, like our diet and the things we do to challenge our brains, can be.” They go on to say the latest evidence suggests up to 40% of all cases of dementia are linked to factors we may be able to influence.

A tasty way which could decrease our risk is to enhance our daily meals with the addition of several spices. The first of these spices is turmeric, which research shows has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric contains an active, natural compound (polyphenol) called curcumin and is part of what gives turmeric its yellow hue. Mary-Eve Brown, an oncology clinical dietitian/nutritionist at Johns Hopkins Medicine, says some research shows a decrease in pain for patients with osteoarthritis when eating turmeric in recipes. Doctors suggest getting turmeric naturally in your diet is healthier than taking supplements.

The world’s most expensive spice, saffron, is also associated with health benefits including reducing depression symptoms and improving cognitive function; and gives food seasoned with it a golden hue color. The commonly used pepper is another spice on the list of beneficial foods as it may improve brain function and lower depression symptoms. Its value increases when used with turmeric as it “improves the bioavailability of nutrients in other foods, meaning your body absorbs more of the good stuff from what you eat.” Studies find another common spice, sage, may improve memory in low amounts.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, a senior living community in Peoria, Arizona, we take every step to ensure the health and well-being of our residents. Our beautiful home offers independent living and assisted living as well as all-inclusive memory care. Contact us for more information and to schedule a tour.

Not All Memory Problems Are Caused by a Dementia Disease

June 12, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Many of us have been embarrassed by forgetting someone’s name when we unexpectedly run into them or missing an appointment. The Medical News Today (MNT) describes short-term memory as the brain systems involved in storing information for short periods, usually up to about 30 seconds. Short-term memory typically holds about seven pieces of information at a time. Our long-term memory is where old memories are stored.

Experts remind seniors not all problems with memory loss are caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia but rather some are age-related or caused by outside factors. One example is sleep as research shows lack of sleep interferes with short-term memory and is vital to memory consolidation, which is the process of preserving key memories and discarding excessive or irrelevant information. Drinking too much alcohol and using recreational drugs also interfere with memory consolation; and overtime can cause irreversible damage to both short and long-term memory.

Other issues that cause memory loss can be medications (check with your doctor), infections such as Lyme disease, urinary tract infections (UTI), and organ failure, such as liver failure. Even a small amount of hearing or vision loss can interfere with a person’s ability to take in and process new information. Experts say once the problem is solved such as with hearing aids, memory problems should improve.

Chronic cardiovascular problems like hypertension and high cholesterol impair blood flow to the brain, leading to a condition called vascular dementia. Depression, anxiety, chronic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder additionally have the potential to cause memory problems but typically go away once the underlying problems are resolved. For any of these various reasons, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider if you are having memory problems as it could be treatable.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge offers specialized memory care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood caters to our most tender residents with purposeful activities, trained caregivers, food service, and security. Independent Living and Assisted Living – Which is Right for You?

June 10, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Often seniors and their families are confused with the terms “independent living” and “assisted living” and are not sure which one is best suited for their needs.  To clarify, the term independent living is used to describe communities that are designed specifically for seniors 55 and older who want to and can live without any help.  Assisted living is designed for seniors who still wish to live independently with personal privacy and autonomy but require assistance in their daily lives.

Independent living is ideal for individuals who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle.  While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, day trips and meals.  Senior independent communities offer residents the freedom to enjoy their retirement years without being tied down with routine chores that need to be done when owning a home.

At assisted living communities, residents get help with daily personal care and are provided with an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour supervision.  Generally a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family.  Other amenities offered by assisted living communities may include a range of activities and wellness programs.

If you are looking for exceptional independent or assisted living in Peoria, AZ, MorningStar is it.  We offer privacy, comfort, and security, and a staff that works hard to meet the needs of our remarkable residents.  MorningStar at Golden Ridge has stylish Casitas and suites in a variety of floor plans and configurations.  Amenities include all-day dining, swimming pool, library, theater/chapel, fitness centers, and scheduled transportation along with wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  We would love the opportunity to tell you more about our beautiful community.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Our passionate commitment to serving seniors has proudly earned us a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. An Early Parkinson’s Diagnose Increases Treatment Options

June 05, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Medical News Today reports too many people do not get diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and related neurodegenerative diseases until they are in the advanced stages; thereby limiting their prevention and treatment options. Medical professionals say although the disease has typically been categorized as primarily a movement disorder, new research finds executive function may be a major factor in determining its progression. Executive function is defined as a broad group of mental skills enabling people to complete tasks and interact with others. Disordered executive function impairs a person’s ability to organize and manage behavior.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation the top 10 signs of the disease are:

  • Tremors

  • Small handwriting

  • Loss of smell

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Trouble moving or walking

  • Constipation

  • A soft or low voice

  • Masked face (looking depressed or mad)

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Stooping or hunching over

If you have any of these signs, you should see your healthcare provider. He or she may refer you to a neurologist, who specializes in the brain as well as other specialists. Experts say there is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, but rather your treatment will be tailored to address your own special needs and is usually a team effort. Based on your symptoms, treatment may include seeing a physical, speech or occupational therapist; medications and exercises.

Research also suggests a strong link between those who experience what is known as “minor hallucinations” early on in the disease to a more rapid loss of executive function as well as cognitive decline in the later stages. Minor hallucinations involve the senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste. These include seeing someone who is not there or seeing a face or object in something like a cloud or a carpet. It is important to let your doctor know if you are experiencing any hallucinations.

Couples are Welcome in Many Assisted Living Communities

May 31, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

When a couple’s health experiences are different, and one is healthier than the other, that person may be assuming the role of caregiver.

Many senior living communities like MorningStar of Arvada welcome couples; where we not only expertly and compassionately address the needs of a person living with a chronic illness but also the needs of the healthier spouse. MorningStar of Arvada’s assisted living provides the maintenance-free environment of independent living with the addition of care services for the ADLs (activities of daily living) tailored to meet the needs of the resident. We offer an array of floor plans starting with studios and one-bedroom options to large two-bedroom, two bath suites. Along with beautifully prepared restaurant-style meals served all-day, suites have kitchenettes with full-sized appliances and handicap-accessible bathrooms.  Moreover MorningStar of Arvada welcomes your four-footed furry family member.

Senior-friendly activities, resort-style amenities and built-in companionship can be a winning combination for many couples. With a Little Effort, We can be Our “Best Self” as We Age

May 29, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Medical experts discuss the natural changes and not so natural changes our bodies go through as we age, and things we can do to help mitigate or delay some of the impact. The first thing to consider is that our heart must work harder as our arteries and blood vessels become stiffer, leading to things like high blood pressure and other forms of heart disease.

To keep your heart as healthy as possible, doctors recommend staying active each day. Walking, swimming or even moderate types of exercise can help maintain your weight. A heart-healthy lifestyle also includes sleeping 7 or 8 hours a night and eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and plant proteins.

Loss of muscle mass can reduce body strength and make it difficult to get around safely. Experts suggest daily exercise like a brisk walk and/or lifting light weights can help improve strength and function. Remember it is always important to check with your doctor to see how much exercise is right for you.

Older people may begin to notice changes to their sight and hearing. You may find yourself needing reading glasses or having difficulty driving at night. A sign of hearing problems can include trouble hearing higher frequencies, needing to increase the volume on the TV, or following conversations in a crowded restaurant. The best remedy is to have your vision and hearing regularly checked; wear sunglasses when in the sun, and earplugs to protect from loud noises.

Occurrence of tooth decay, plaque, infections and gum disease can be more frequent as we age. Good dental health includes brushing and flossing twice daily and getting regular check-ups and teeth cleaning.

As our bones begin to weaken in our 40s, and bone loss is sometimes measured by a decrease of an inch or two in stature; joints can start to feel stiffer as fluid and cartilage decreases and wears away. The 50s and 60s can bring on the first signs of arthritis, which is why doctors stress it is important to get enough calcium in your diet and vitamin D.

MorningStar of Arvada is a vibrant senior living community that caters to the various needs of seniors with unsurpassed independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada, CO families trust. Contact us to learn more.

Benefits of Assisted Living

May 24, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Way too often people have misconceptions about assisted living communities. They think of the nursing facility where their grandparents may have spent their last years in and don’t want to put themselves or an older loved one into something like that. After all, haven’t we all earned a happy retirement?

Today’s assisted living communities are just that – a community. They provide a productive lifestyle with social interactions, safety and the proper support a person needs to help maintain their independence. Many also offer resort-style amenities like all-day, restaurant –style dining; housekeeping, fitness centers, salons, bistros and in-house theatres and chapels to give seniors a vibrant community to safely age in place.

Furthermore many older adults living alone say they feel socially isolated and lonely, which can put them at an increased risk for depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. When seniors transition to an assisted living community such as MorningStar of Littleton, they have opportunities to engage in wellness programs and entertaining activities and events. These can range from things like art classes to chair yoga and trivia games. Seniors also have an easier time eating healthier as they no longer need to shop, prepare, cook and clean-up meals.

Another reason senior living can make sense is seniors find their current home requires expensive modifications to make it safe for them. Throughout MorningStar’s community, the physical environment is designed to help residents stay safe and prevent falls. Suites are equipped with handicap-accessible bathrooms and 24/7 emergency call systems; and have lots of lighting and large windows. Dedicated care managers are available around-the-clock to lend a hand when needed, and provide compassionate daily help with the ADLs (activities of daily living).

To learn more about assisted living and whether it is the right decision for you or a loved one, we encourage you to set-up a tour of MorningStar of Littleton. MorningStar communities have proudly earned a reputation from residents and their families as some of the most trusted senior living Littleton, CO and the surrounding area offers.

Father’s Day Was First Officially Celebrated in 1910

May 20, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Father’s Day was first officially celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington.  It then took another 58 years (in 1972) after President Woodrow Wilson had declared Mother’s Day to be an official holiday for dads to get their own official national holiday.  This year Father’s Day is June 16th, as the holiday is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month.

The earliest public event honoring fathers was in 1908 at a West Virginia church.  It was held in memory of 362 area men who had been killed in a tragic coal mine accident the year before.  It was a one-time commemoration and not intended to be an annual holiday.

The first recognized celebration of all fathers took place at the Spokane, WA YMCA on June 19, 1910.  It was organized by Sonora Smart Dodd.  Her father, William Jackson Smart was a single parent who raised six children.  Ms. Dodd had heard a sermon about the Mother’s Day celebration at Central Methodist Episcopal Church a year earlier and encouraged her church to have a similar event honoring fathers.  She had wanted it to be on her father’s birthday, June 5th, but her church’s pastors needed more time to prepare sermons so it was held on the third Sunday of the month.

Our fathers hold a special place in our hearts and certainly deserve to have their “own day.” However, getting fathers nationally recognized was not as easy as it had been to get a designated national holiday for mothers.  Throughout the years there were efforts to make it a national holiday but it never moved forward.  It wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson issued a presidential proclamation honoring fathers, and designated the third Sunday as Father’s Day.  In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the holiday into law.

Downsizing for a Move to an Assisted Living Community

May 17, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

If your mom or dad has reached the time in their life where they need help with daily personal care activities, moving into an assisted living community is the perfect solution. You will have peace of mind knowing their needs are being met and they are safe and comfortable.  However, as much of the task of helping them move will likely fall on your shoulders, you have probably begun to realize that paring back a lifetime’s worth of possessions is a bit overwhelming.  Not to worry, there are many good books on the topic as well as useful tips on the Internet.

Organizing experts caution that the job can be complicated and fraught with emotion because as you see a pile of stuff to sort through and toss; your parents see treasures and memories.  Begin by creating a list of things your parents will need at their new place (keep in mind the size) and adding in the treasured items and personal belongings they want to keep.  If something is hard for them to part with, help them to think of a family member or friend they would like to give it to.  Also, remind them if they sell the item, they can use the money toward something better suited for their new home such as a smaller couch or coffee table.

Now the experts recommend going from room to room and start sorting by keeping, tossing, or donating piles.  In addition, rather than always asking your parents what they want to keep or get rid of, pare down the selection, and then ask them yes or no questions.  Presorting items also helps to avoid keeping lots of multiple items.

By measuring the size of your parent’s new suite, you can create a floor plan to realistically show how well their furnishings will fit.  Include the amount of cupboards and storage space they will have to help you know how much is too much.  Remember you do not want the new place to be so crowded that they can barely move safely about.

Keep in mind that if your parent is moving into a community such as MorningStar at Golden Ridge, you will be treated to meals created by our Executive Chef served in our full-service dining room.  Also, our well-designed suites come equipped with blinds, carpeting, and overhead lighting.  Please visit our website to learn more about our beautiful independent living, assisted living and memory care community.

The Importance of Socialization for Older Adults

May 15, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

A UCSF Division of Geriatrics study found 43 percent of seniors report regularly experiencing loneliness. Mayo clinic psychologist, Dr. Craig Sawchuk, Ph.D., explains why this can be a problem. He says as “social animals by nature; we tend to function better when we’re in a community setting and being around others.”

Several studies report a link between social isolation and an increased risk of disease, including one from the Academy of Science, which found loneliness can lead to higher rates of poor physical and mental health. Health concerns for isolated adults include hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac failure, depression, anxiety and Alzheimer’s disease.

It becomes harder for seniors who live alone to socialize as they get into their upper 70s or 80s as many stop driving and/or suffer from chronic health problems affecting their mobility. Other contributing issues to loneliness in the elderly may include the death of a spouse or close family members and friends.

To emphasize how important socialization is for older adults, the American Public Health Association explains the most effective way for seniors to improve their health is to increase socialization. They report “socialization improves mood, cognition, memory recall, and is associated with healthy behaviors, including exercise.”

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, our goal is to promote physical, intellectual, spiritual and social wellbeing. We provide everything seniors need for quality of life and to age in place safely and comfortably. Along with care and hospitality services, our signature wellness programs and activities are designed to engage and encourage residents to live fully productive lives.

In addition to independent and assisted living, we offer memory care, respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (up to a full month) so you can see if we are a good fit. Please contact us today for more information about MorningStar’s senior living in Peoria, AZ.
