Reset Your Internal Clock for a Good Night’s Sleep

August 15, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

As more and more research shows, getting enough sleep each night is important for everything from better mental health to better physical health. Some studies have even reported findings of an increased risk for Alzheimer’s in people who routinely have sleep problems.

If you are someone who has trouble getting to sleep or sleeping through the night, the US News & World Report recently published several tips from sleep expert to help reset your sleep clock and improve your sleep habits. They recommend beginning with reestablishing waking and bedtime rituals by going to bed at the same time each night and waking up the same time. It may even be a good idea to eat meals at the same time. Your bedroom should be dark and use a light-blocking sleep mask if needed. Also keep your bedroom a work free zone. Other recommendations include avoiding caffeine after 12PM, spending time outdoors during daylight hours, and exercising each day.

Dr. Kannan Ramar, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a pulmonologist, critical care specialist and sleep medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic, and professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, says, “Pervasive worry is a major factor in sleep disruption.” He advises his patients to turn off the TV and your tablet one or two hours before bedtime. Stop drinking alcohol at least one or two hours before sleep and consider moderating your consumption.

If you have started the search for senior housing, please take a look at MorningStar of Arvada. Our community is situated on 1.5 acres and encircled by historic Golden and the nearby Arvada Reservoir. We offer all-inclusive independent living and assisted living as well as memory care that compassionately and expertly connects and nurtures the human essence whatever the extent of memory loss. Tips to Help Keep a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Safe

August 13, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Alzheimer’s disease results in symptoms causing impaired judgement, forgetfulness, and agitation, as well as problems with gait and balance increasing the risk for falls. This is why experts say it is important to take the proper steps to keep your spouse or mom or dad safe if they have Alzheimer’s. They explain the goal of caregivers should be a balancing act between providing an environment that offers as much independence as possible, while at the same time, ensuring the person’s safety and wellbeing.

Recommendations include removing knobs from the stove, and if the person can handle it, install automatic shut-off valves with timer and motion sensors. At a certain stage of the disease, it is not safe for the person to be cooking, and if needed, look into food delivery services. Additionally lower the temperature of the water coming from your taps to avoid the person getting scalded from hot water. As confusion is part of Alzheimer’s, experts say store dangerous chemicals and cleaning supplies in a locked area.

To reduce the risk for falls, install grab bars in the bathroom and put non-skid mats in the tub or shower. Stairways should be well-lit and uncluttered as well as hallways and pathways from room to room. Doctors who work with Alzheimer’s patients caution it is important to remember it is a progressive disease, and there may be a time when more restrictive protocols are necessary such as closing off a staircase altogether.

At the MorningStar of Arvada, our Reflections Neighborhood provides 29 secure memory care suites for residents suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The neighborhood is separate from the rest of our community and includes an enclosed courtyard, suites equipped with emergency call systems, and handicap-accessible bathrooms. Each resident receives an individualized service plan and participants in daily activities such as arts and crafts, listening or dancing to music, physical exercise, special celebrations and other events.

In addition we have 112 bright independent and assisted living suites in spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans (some as large as 1374 square feet). Please visit our website to learn more about trusted memory care Arvada, CO offers.

Music is a Soothing Balm to Many Alzheimer’s Patients

June 17, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

There are lots of stories of regarding people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease who may not remember the name of a close relative but can sing a song or whistle a tune they knew before the disease robbed them of their other memories. Experts say this is true even in the very late stages of the disease and is why many long-term care homes offer music to help promote wellness and enhance memory for those with dementia.

Listening to music is a meaningful activity for many with Alzheimer’s and can aid in soothing and calming as well as lifting spirits. It can create a connection for a person who no longer has the ability to speak, and caregivers has seen residents give impromptu hugs and kisses or engage in gentle, rhythmic movements such as rocking in a chair or patting their leg to the beat.

Jörn-Henrik Jacobsen, a scientist at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, and the University of Amsterdam, published a study in the journal Brain that compared the brain scans of 32 young and healthy men and women with those of 20 people with Alzheimer’s disease. Jacobsen found musical memory may be spared – unlike other parts of the brain – throughout Alzheimer’s disease progression. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America explains, this is because “following the rhythm or beat to music by whistling or singing comes from a part of the brain that doesn’t require cognitive functioning.

At the MorningStar of Arvada senior living community we offer 112 bright independent and assisted living suites as well as provide 29 secure memory care suites in our Reflections’ wing devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Every aspect of our memory care addresses the needs of our most tender residents from the physical design of our community right through to our food service. Please visit our website for availability; your loved one deserves the finest memory care Arvada CO offers.

Our Memory Care Caters to the Specialized Needs of Residents

August 13, 2020 by Karla A

Along with 112 bright independent and assisted living suites, MorningStar of Arvada has another 29 secure memory care suites in our Reflections’ wing devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  Starting with the actual physical design right through to our holistic, compassionate care, every aspect of our memory care is designed to provide the best for our most tender residents including our food service.

Many individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s have trouble using a fork and knife to eat with, which is why many memory care homes resort to serving finger foods like chicken nuggets, fish sticks, french fries and purees.  The problem with this is while the food may be easy to eat; they are not very nutritional and lack variety.

This is why the MorningStar communities have modified our memory care food service to one that avoids overly processed meals, and is both tasty and nutritional.  Our menus now consist of foods like pastas and other edible items wrapped in puff pastry sheets, egg roll wrappers and turnovers that are easy for residents to pick up and eat.

Our Chef also utilizes techniques such as mixing and molding soft, pureed food to resemble its pre-blended form. For example residents might be served something that looks like blueberry French toast but is really a French toast puree that has been shaped and molded with binding agents.  Also in normal times, we routinely welcome families to come and join us for a meal, and hopefully will be able to resume this tradition soon.

We want you to know that our entire dementia care team is honored to walk alongside the memory-impaired (and their families) on this unexpected journey.  Please contact us for availability and pricing at the most trusted memory care in Arvada, CO.  While you are visiting our website, be sure to read our protocols for dealing with COVID-19 and how we are safely accepting new residents into our loving independent living, assisted living and memory care community.

MorningStar of Arvada offers the very best in senior living with a unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve as we work toward creating a true home for residents amidst a serene setting.  Please visit our website for availability; your loved one deserves the finest memory care Arvada CO offers.

Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease Can be Overwhelming

February 29, 2020 by Karla A

The Alzheimer’s Association states that the number of adults suffering from Alzheimer’s disease is increasing and there is now an estimated 5.8 million Americans with the disease.  They add that every 65 seconds someone comes down with the disease.  Among that number includes approximately 200,000 people who are under the age of 65 who have younger-onset Alzheimer's.   Experts also predict that as we continue to live longer, the number of those age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s will grow to 13.8 million by 2050.  Right now, it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and currently, cannot be prevented or cured.

These sobering statistics mean that more families are finding themselves in the situation of having a family member with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.  For those who are family caregivers, the Alzheimer's Association found it can take an overwhelming toll on them both physically and emotionally.  Their studies show that close to 60 percent of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers “rate their stress level as high or very high.”  Approximately 40 percent of family caregivers suffer from depression and required healthcare services related to the emotional and physical toll of their caregiving.

Experts recommend that if you are family caregiver that you reach out for help from a variety of sources including relatives, friends, and local community organizations.  Caregiver support groups can also be helpful as you can connect with other who are dealing with the same problems.  Respite care and day care centers can also give you some relief from the responsibility and difficulties of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s.

Another solution is to contact MorningStar at Golden Ridge and learn about our experienced and compassionate memory care.  Along with independent and assisted living options, we have 35 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Please see our website for more information about the loving approach we take to memory care.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge represents the best in senior living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. We invite you to schedule a tour to see firsthand our exceptional independent living, assisted living and memory care.

The Holidays Help to Remind Us of the Importance of Serving Others

November 29, 2019 by Karla A

During the holidays, many of us make the time to step up and serve others.  Whether it is volunteering at our church, a local charity or an organization committed to good works, we all know the good feeling that comes from helping others.

As the year draws to an end, it is also a good time to reflect on our lives as we look toward the future.  This may be the time to seriously think about how we can keep the good feeling we get by helping others all throughout the year rather than for just a couple of hours.  Instead this may be the year for you to commit to making a difference in someone else’s life, and just not as a volunteer, but as a fulfilling career.

MorningStar Senior Living invites you to be part of something inspirational, profound and rewarding every day and to join a group of servant-minded leaders called to serve seniors.  As Ken Jaeger, MorningStar’s Founder/CEO says when he speaks our team members or other audiences, “Don’t wait to serve. Serve now. Today. Get involved somewhere. It will make you a better person (and if you work for MorningStar, a better team member). Don’t wait until your children are grown. Don’t wait until you retire. Give now, give generously. And just see what happens. For you cannot out-give God.”

Right now we are seeking extraordinary individuals to fill a variety of assisted living jobs in the Phoenix area.  Our beautiful residential homes offer independent living, assisted living and memory care and include communities in Glendale, Fountain Hills, Phoenix, and Peoria.  Open positions include care managers, medication care managers, dining room servers, cooks and housekeeping jobs. Phoenix’s four communities are committed to providing the meaningful training team members need to be successful at their jobs including Radiance, our service initiative that enriches the atmosphere of our homes and infuses our hearts.   If you wish to serve others, there is no better place to do it than at Phoenix’s MorningStar communities.

At MorningStar’s Arcadia, Arrowhead, Fountain Hills & Golden Ridge communities, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  With a foundation built on honoring God and valuing all seniors, we are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve. October 29, 2019 by Karla A

Whether you are one of our Executive Directors or working in one of our housekeeping jobs in Phoenix’s gorgeous MorningStar senior living communities, we consider you to be a valuable member of our team.  After all without the dedication of the whole team, it would not be possible for us to deliver the type of service our MorningStar brand was founded on.  Our loving homes include MorningStar at Arcadia, MorningStar of Fountain Hills, MorningStar at Arrowhead, and the new MorningStar at Golden Ridge.

All of our communities have been intentionally designed to promote a culture where both our residents and our staff can thrive.  To help us advance our goal to build a distinguished team, we follow the principles found within our mission statement that reads: to invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well; and a commitment to hiring and retaining employees who use creative minds and compassionate hearts to serve residents.

Thus all new employees receive purposeful training that helps them to understand, articulate and contribute to our extraordinary culture, which is defined less by what we do and more by why we do it.  This culture is shaped by “Radiance,” our service initiative that infuses the principles of our core values - Love, Kindness, Honesty, Goodness, Fairness, and Respect and is how we strive to deliver service, with sincerity, depth of purpose and warmth.  Each team member carries Radiance’s precepts on a Culture Card as we all know that only with daily practice does a habit become part of our core.

As a service professional, you will become an expert on understanding our residents’ unmet needs, reading body language, nurturing connections, and knowing life stories and preference.  You will know the best ways to surprise and delight our cherished residents as well as appreciate the intrinsic value of your service and the effect you have on the lives of seniors. Please consider applying to one of our assisted living jobs at our Phoenix senior living communities and join a team with a tagline of “Service Becomes Us!

Discover the MorningStar Difference; We Invite You to Join Our Team

October 28, 2019 by Karla A

At the Phoenix MorningStar senior living communities, we are proud to be “different.” It begins with a vision that states: in pursuit of excellence, MorningStar resolves to be a company of servant-minded, purpose-driven leaders in our senior communities and throughout the world.

While the servant leadership concept is found in some of the oldest philosophical thought, more recently it was deliberated in great detail in an essay by Robert K Greenleaf in 1970.  Greenleaf explains, “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…”  He goes on to say the leader-first and the servant first are two extreme types. “The servant first makes sure that other people’s highest priority needs are served. A servant leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong.”

At MorningStar we are proud to have a staff comprised of servant-minded leaders who are committed to serving our resident-families, fellow team members, and the wider community.  This dedicated commitment to service comes from the fact that when we hire staff, we look for virtues such as kindness, selflessness and character. Then we provide the meaningful training and the support team members need to reach their full potential.

If you have a felt calling to serve and love the idea of hanging out with remarkable seniors, we invite you to take a look at MorningStar’s various assisted living jobs in Phoenix.  Our educational requirements and skill sets are diverse, and positions include everything from care managers and medication care managers/QMAPs to dining room servers, cooks and several housekeeping jobs at Phoenix’s best senior living communities.  Our homes include MorningStar at Arcadia, MorningStar of Fountain Hills, MorningStar at Arrowhead, and the new MorningStar at Golden Ridge. Are You Ready to Serve?

September 18, 2019 by Karla A

If you live in or around the greater Phoenix area, you will be interested to know that several of our MorningStar communities, including MorningStar at Arcadia, MorningStar of Fountain Hills, MorningStar at Arrowhead, and MorningStar at Golden Ridge are seeking individuals with a felt calling to serve.  As MorningStar’s Founder/CEO Ken Jaegers explains as he inspires our own team members or any other audience he speaks to by saying, “Don’t wait to serve. Serve now. Today. Get involved somewhere. It will make you a better person (and if you work for MorningStar, a better team member). Don’t wait until your children are grown. Don’t wait until you retire. Give now, give generously. And just see what happens. For you cannot out-give God.”

Back in 2003 when Ken founded MorningStar Senior Living, he built it on the profound truth of honoring God in all aspects of our business practices and relationships, and to create a superior quality of life for MorningStar’s residents.  In addition our mission includes valuing all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals and investing generously in our team’s ability to serve well.

You will also find that once you become part of our MorningStar team, whether as a caregiver, housekeeper, food server or a director, you will be welcomed into a family of dedicated service professionals united by a goal of providing the best quality of care for our residents.  To ensure you have the chance to live up to your potential and grow into your position, we provide a range of purposeful training, mentoring, and support.

Moreover while each of our Phoenix area communities is beautiful designed, decorated and offers a wide range of resort-style amenities, we recognize that the heartbeat of our homes is our loving, compassionate team.  Without their commitment to service, we would not have family members glowingly write about the care their loved ones receive under our roofs as one husband recently did. He explains, “I’m very grateful for the loving and attentive kindness of all of the MorningStar caregivers. It takes a load off my mind to know that my wife is in such good hands.”   Please visit our website to learn more about how you too can make a difference by serving in one of our assisted living jobs in Phoenix.

At MorningStar’s Arcadia, Arrowhead, Fountain Hills & Golden Ridge communities, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built on honoring God and valuing all seniors, and we are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve.
